For those of us who have worked in the lead generation industry, we know how difficult and overwhelming it can be at times. Namely, what it means to different individuals to be in the online marketing industry.

Specifically, leads are potential customers that fill out a form on various websites to learn more information about a product or service. They give their own information in exchange for more information per say. There are many different key players in the industry as well as some definitions of lead generation, these include:

  • Lead buyers- An example would be University of Phoenix or E-surance.  These are large lead buyers, but small ones include small firms that work in various industries including mortgage, or debt for example.

Lead aggregators –marketing service firms that supply leads to multiple lead buyers. An example would be Underground Elephant, a company that generates various financial leads such as debt and mortgage, as well as education leads.

Lead sellers – companies here are similar to lead aggregators, however the biggest distinction between the two is that the classic lead seller doesn’t work directly with the lead buyer but works with the aggregator and plays the role similar to an affiliate network.

Technology solution providers – those who make the industry run smoothly, whether it’s working on the lead scoring, lead verification front, enabling hot transfers, or making sure landing pages convert better.

  • Consumer sites – sites strictly for brand management and improvement.

  1. Connect consumers to producers or by definition connect leads to the companies they seek.
  2. Work on a real time basis.
